Small Town Spotlight: Dunn, NC — More Than Just a Stop Along I-95

When people think about moving to the Triangle area, Raleigh, Cary, and Fuquay-Varina tend to get most of the attention. But head a little farther south into Harnett County, and you'll find a town with plenty of history, locally owned businesses, and a personality all its own.
This week's Small Town Spotlight takes us to Dunn, North Carolina!

A Little History
Dunn wasn't always called Dunn! The town was originally known as Lucknow before being renamed in honor of Bennett Dunn, who helped oversee construction of the railroad through the area.
Officially incorporated in 1887, Dunn grew through industries like agriculture, timber, turpentine, and textiles. Today, you can still see pieces of that history throughout town, especially in its historic downtown district.
One interesting piece of Dunn's history is its connection to Major General William C. Lee, known as the Father of the U.S. Airborne. His former home is now a museum dedicated to his life and military contributions.
Spend an Afternoon Downtown
One of my favorite things about exploring smaller towns is finding those local spots you might miss if you're just driving through.
Downtown Dunn has a little bit of everything, from coffee and bakeries to boutiques and restaurants.
A few places worth checking out:
Sherry's Bakery: A longtime Dunn staple known for its baked goods and old-fashioned hometown atmosphere.
Broad Street Deli & Market: A great downtown lunch stop with sandwiches, soups, and salads.
Coffee on Broad: A cozy place to grab a coffee before wandering through the shops.
Downtown boutiques and antique shops: Perfect for an afternoon of browsing and finding something unexpected.
And if you enjoy hunting for vintage finds, the Dunn area even has its own thrifting trail connecting antique shops and secondhand stores.
Community Traditions
Dunn may be a small town, but it knows how to bring people together! One of its biggest traditions is the annual NC Cotton Festival, which fills downtown with live music, food vendors, crafts, classic cars, and plenty of family fun. Throughout the year, you'll also find events like the Lucknow Music Festival, Broad Street Block Parties, and seasonal celebrations. When the holidays roll around, Dunn gets into the Christmas spirit with its annual parade and tree lighting, while fall brings Halloween festivities and community gatherings. Whether you're listening to live music downtown, browsing local vendors, or enjoying a holiday tradition with family, there's always something to look forward to. You can keep up with upcoming events through Discover Dunn.
